Happy 65th Birthday, Mom!

Yup, my mom turned 65! We went to Sawmill for brunch, with my brother and uncle (families). It was good to get everyone together for such a momentous occasion. And the food was good too! I had thought about taking my mom to California so that we could see an Ellen DeGeneres show, but unfortunately I didn't have make time to plan for it. Maybe another year.

Maroon 5 & Train

Jason and I went to the Maroon 5 & Train concert. As with most concerts, I enjoyed myself. I think Train 'out-performed' Maroon 5, but I still enjoyed Maroon 5. Train was more interactive with the crowd, where Maroon 5 just played and sang. I didn't enjoy myself as much as I would have liked because I was having dizzy spells earlier that day. [sidenote: I'm convinced that the lady who gave me a massage hit some kind of nerve in my foot, which is what's caused the dizzy spells. I went to the doctor to get checked out, and his tests came back with nothing.]

I wasn't sure if Jason would like the concert, but he actually liked Train. Maroon 5 wasn't his cup of tea, but he thought they were OK.

The first day of school

I know. That was months ago. But I have to purge the information out of my mental hard drive.

As usual, I took the day off. I took Teagan to school, and got her settled into her new classroom. What I'm finding is that the amount of time I stay at the school is diminishing. Which is a good thing, because she's comfortable in her school and with the staff and students. I guess it's starting to hit me that she growing up, and she may not need me depend on me as much.

After that, the rest of my day was spent running errands and going to hair and massage appointments. It was a good day off.

Dinner with Sharon

After a couple months of Sharon quitting, it was time for us to get together. So we met up at Joey's to catch up. We chit-chatted for a couple hours and laughed. I miss her. But at least we still keep in touch.

Teagan is getting more independent

She had a dentist appointment, and normally I go in with her - partly because she sits on my lap, and also because I want to see what they're doing to her. But this time, she told me to stay in the waiting room while she went into the dentist's chair by herself. What?!??! I was somewhat taken aback because I wanted to be in the room with her. *sigh* Well, I guess it's bound to happen sooner or later, but it seems so soon...

The Wiggles' Big Birthday

Every year, I try to take Teagan to some kind of show to expose her to the arts and entertainment world. This time we went to the Wiggles' Big Birthday at Edmonton Expo Centre. She enjoyed herself and as usual, she told me that she "liked the show".

I'm so glad that I can expose Teagan to these types of things because I believe that it helps with her learning and development.

Road trip

Jason, Teagan and I went to Canmore for a mini vacation over the August long weekend. It was a great time for Jason and I to connect, and to experience being with each other 24/7, even if it was only for a short period of time. Part of the reason for the trip was to get away. The other reason was Teagan was a flower girl for her father's wedding. Teagan was so cute in her outfit and she looked like a princess (mind you, I did her hair and make-up (only a little bit), which is why she looked so cute.

I also had an awesome massage while I was there. I need to go back....

Hardwood and carpet and tiles, oh my!

Before heading out to Canmore, we had to pick out our flooring and our countertops for the new house. The first stop was the hardwood place. We were there for about 45 minutes, but after much debate, we picked one out. The next stop was the carpet, tile and countertop place. It was a good thing that we brought the cabinet door (which we borrowed from the show home), to help us. And within an hour, we picked out the rest of our flooring and our paint.

And the saga continues...

OK... after almost two months, I have found a bit of time to continue with my brain dump...

So....

To be continued...

Although I'm on a roll with my mental dump, I do need some sleep.

This session is adjourned...

Wicked

Since I have a habit of jam-packing my weekend, I figured Teagan's birthday wasn't enough to keep me busy for the day, so why not add an evening show? :P

I took my friend, Lisa, to see Wicked, and it was just that! It was cool to see theatre goers get all dressed up for this show. Some people went all out and dressed formal, and wore some of the colours that were used in the production.

The characters were awesome, and their voices were amazing. You know you're watching a great performer when you feel their voices go right through you. And you know you're watching a great performance when it hits you on an emotional level and makes you cry.

Of all the Broadway productions I've seen - and there have been many - Wicked would have to be one of the top shows I've seen. I would probably say that the best show I've seen so far is The Lion King (for the overall production), and then Wicked (for the character performances) would be second.

Teagan's 7th Birthday

This year, Teagan's birthday was at Fort Edmonton Park. We did a pioneer birthday party, and the kids got to make marbles, play some games and make some ice cream. Because I was too busy attending to the details of the party (is the food out? are there enough drinks? is everyone enjoying themselves?), I didn't get to enjoy the party. I didn't really get a chance to see Teagan get involved in the activities. Thank goodness Irma was my photographer for the day! Taking pictures was one less thing for me to worry about, and I'm glad she got the shots that she did.

We had cupcakes and the ice cream the kids made, and then it was off to opening presents. I didn't really want to go through that, but we did anyway. Teagan went through opening her presents like the Tasmanian Devil. Which was good, because we went through everything pretty quick.

Once that was done, it was back to the main entrance to send these kids home. As usual, Teagan went home with too much stuff. (I really need to purge).

We bought a house!

In light of our recent engagement, Jason and I decided to start looking for a house. Initially we thought about looking for an older house, that way we wouldn't have to worry about landscaping, etc. But then finding that "perfect" house that was in our price range was a bit difficult.

On a whim, we decided to look for a new house. What could it hurt? We looked at one home builder, and saw that they had a quick possession home. We looked at the photo gallery of the show home, and fell in love with it. But could we afford it? We made a trip to the show home to check it out. And it was even better seeing it in person.

I emailed my mortgage broker and told her the situation. After a couple back-and-forth emails, and a phone call, she gave me an amount that we would be approved for. And the price of the new house we looked at was within our mortgage amount.

So the next step was to make an offer to the builder. We asked for a few more options/upgrades and gave them our offer. A few days later, we got word that they accepted. Yay!

I was a little freaked out because I couldn't believe what I just did. I've always talked about getting my own place, and now here I am doing just that. The purchase of the house finally sunk in when we signed the papers, and I wrote a cheque for our down payment.

Katy Perry

I went to the Katy Perry concert with Sharon. Unfortunately we weren't sitting together, but it was still a lot of fun! We texted each other once in a while to check up on each other. During the concert, a Russell Brand lookalike was walking through the stands. I could tell he was an impersonator because for one thing, he was much shorter, and if you looked carefully, you could so tell that it wasn't the real guy. But yet people still fell for him, and thought Russell Brand was in the stands. Seriously?! I could understand him wanting to support his wife and possibly go to one of her concerts. But here in Edmonton? Yeah, I don't think so.

Leaving the concert wasn't so fun. Sharon and I got caught in the crowd of people trying to get on the LRT. We just needed to pass through because we parked across the street. But because it's madness trying to get out of there, we had to wait for people to filter through. What made it even worse was the smell - not the smell of the place, but the smell of other people. Ugh! It's amazing how some people simply have no concept of personal hygiene. And because my nose is so sensitive, it's more intense to me. But all Sharon and I could do was laugh.

Thursday, June 23, 2011

In my last post, I mentioned that it would be 5 days before I would know what this "thing" was. But instead of finding out on the Friday, I found out the day before.

I had my hunch of what it could be, but I didn't want to believe it just in case I was wrong. I mean, I didn't want to get my hopes up, only to get disappointed in the end. Anyway, Jason called me on Thursday evening, in somewhat a bit of a panic, and said plans had changed. He was on his way to pick me up and he emphasized that we had "to go now because the weather is changing and I have to take you somewhere before it starts to rain". Uh OK?!

So he picked me up and he drove like a mad man to where he had to go. He took me to McNally high school. It was windy and cold, and the clouds were rolling in. So I wore one of his jackets that was in his back seat to keep warm. We walked across the field to a bench which overlooks the river. He sat really close to me, and when I turned to look at him, he took a deep breath, pulled out a ring, and asked me to marry him. My initial reaction was "omg, is he really asking me?" and then it was "omg, he is asking me... this is really happening." I had no words, so all I did was look at him with tears running down his face, and nodded yes. [Seriously?!?! The guy just asked me to marry him, and that's all I did?! I guess you could say this is one life event that I never really pre-planned for.]

Anyway, he gave me his mom's wedding ring. And once I finally got myself together, I told him 'yes' with a fist pump. Yeah, I'm such a nerd.

Finally...I'm back

After a 3 month hiatus, I am back. Man, do I have a mental dump to do! So bear with me as I go through the 3 months worth of highs and lows.

T minus 5 days

Friday. That's when I discover the culmination of this "thing" that's been brewing. Jason mentioned before that I'd be the last to know, and I can see why. My family, a couple of his friends, and even his daughter is in on it. Could it be? As I've mentioned before, I didn't want to over-analyze the situation because I don't want to set myself up and potentially get disappointed later. And I've been trying hard not to. But it doesn't help when hints are being dropped, and his daughter almost "slipped" in saying something earlier.

I guess all I can do is wait...

I need to keep myself pre-occupied. More importantly, I need to get some sleep...

Missing a connection

It's amazing how connecting on a certain level just reinforces things. For the past few weeks, and up until today, I felt as though I lost the connection. But recognizing and acknowledging it, helped with the realization of it. I'm good now.

Mental dump

*sigh* It's only been a week since my last post, but it feels like forever. Where does all the time go? And why does it feel like I can't keep up?

Birthdays
Since my last post, my nephew and niece celebrated their birthdays (it was combined in one day). Jason FINALLY met my brother, although they couldn't really get to know each other because my brother was busy with the birthday festivities. But at least they met.

Work
Work is... well, it's work. One of my co-workers is on vacation and I'm covering for her. In doing so, I realize that I'm so glad I'm not in that position anymore. There's only so much data entry/form processing/etc. you can do. It seems simple enough, yet some people just don't get it.

Fender bender
I was involved in a fender bender last Thursday. No one was hurt (thank goodness!), but it was my fault. I rear-ended the guy in front of me, but luckily I just damaged his bumper - minor dent (or so I thought), and some chipped paint. There was no damage to my car, just some scratches. But I'm officially a statistic. Texting and driving is not a good thing - even if you're at a red light. Being the "multi-tasker" that I am, I figured I would reply to a text, since I'm a red light. When I noticed that the light turned green, I slowly took my foot off the brake pedal, not realizing that the guy in front of me wasn't moving yet. And then smack! - right into his bumper. The guy was good about it though, and even tried to make light of the situation by saying that it was nice to meet me. Uh, not really the way I wanted to meet him! I asked him to get a quote for the damage, and depending on the cost, that would determine whether or not I would go through insurance. When he got back to me the next day with a quote, I nearly fell off my chair. $3000.00 is what he was quoted. WTF?!?! I've had my rear bumper replaced (twice), and had more damage than his and that cost me around $1500.00. So that kinda put a damper on my day. In the end, I have no choice but to go through insurance. Apparently, because of my "6-star" standing (the highest you can get), I don't have to pay a deductible. I also found out that I've been getting a 10% discount for the past 6 years, which is why my premiums have been low. So now, I drop to a 5-star rating, and my premiums go up about $200 for the year. Not bad, but still...

I want a new car...

Corporate challenge
I wasn't participating, but I was part of Jason's cheering squad. Him and a couple of his co-workers were mountain biking on Saturday, so I, along with a couple of his other friends, decided to go out and support him. He did pretty well, but I'm not sure on his overall standing.

20/20
I had my one-month post-op check up for my eyes, and I'm happy to say that I have 20/20 vision in both eyes! Woo hoo! I think I deserve a pair of shoes...lol!

I need a vacation
Or something. I haven't had a massage in 6 months now. My massage therapist went AWOL, and so I'm back to looking for another one. But, I have all these damn vouchers for massages to use and I haven't had a chance to book anything. I know I need to book them because I don't want them to expire. I also want to go shopping, but can't find time to do that either. I've been missing a couple of my yoga classes because of work, so now I have to figure out when to make them up. AAARRRGGGHHH!! I just need me time!!!

The pot is still brewing...
Might even be at the simmering stage. Even though I said before that I wasn't going to over-analyze it, I'm finding myself starting to wonder. But then I stop myself. And then something else will pop in my head, which gets me wondering again, and then I stop myself again. I'm having a tug-of-war with myself in my head, and it's bugging me.

On a happier note
Teagan has two more teeth that are wiggly, and she's waiting for the tooth fairy to come and give her two chocolates. Smart kid.

A sign

About a month ago, I heard this quote:

"When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change."  -- Wayne Dyer

And then on Wednesday, when I picked up my book of quotes at work, I came across the exact same quote.

So what is it that I'm not getting? Am I over-analyzing things so much that I don't see the obvious?

One thing's for sure, I'm too tired to think about it right now. I should go to sleep...

The pot's brewing

Something's going to happen. Not too sure what it is, but it's going to happen. I've been hearing a lot of "hypotheticals" lately. Before, I would over-analyze the situation and, in turn, drive myself crazy. But now, I'm not doing that. I can actually "remove" myself from it and not go down that path. Realistically, I can't do anything about something to which I know nothing about. So why stress about it? Besides, I'm still trying to get back on track. I've been feeling a bit "lost and confused" lately - things are swirling around me, and my mind is feeling chaotic. I think part of it is because I haven't been having any "me" time. I haven't had a massage in over 5 months, and at times I'm feeling blah. And then you add the fact that I'm not getting enough sleep (which is my own fault - notice how late it is as I'm blogging this), and... it becomes a vicious cycle.

*sigh*... I should get some sleep...

Uncertainty

A lot has happened at work this past week, in light of Sharon leaving. Without getting into too much detail (because it would take WAY too long to write it all out, and honestly, I don't want to hash it out again); I have to assess where I'm at with work. Do I want to stay? If so, do I stay in the same department? Or do I explore other options within the company? Should I just quit and start again?

I had the intention of assessing the situation while I'm off, recovering from my eye surgery. But I haven't really thought about it until now.

What to do, what to do. I guess I can't really make a decision in 2 days. Only time will tell...

Another tooth for the tooth fairy

Teagan pulled out another tooth yesterday. She was so proud showing me her new "space".

Cheeeeeeeese!

I can see!

I had my eye surgery yesterday, and it went well. From what one of the assistants said, the right eye took 41 seconds, and the left eye took 33 seconds. Talk about quick. I have to say that it was the weirdest experience ever! If I could somehow film what I saw while I was under the laser, it would make for an interesting light show.

I was so happy when I woke up this morning and looked at my alarm clock and I didn't have to squint! So much so that I decided to sleep an extra half hour. :P

Anyway, here's to being lens free!

Quote

"When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change."  -- Wayne Dyer

Knowledge at Noon

I went to a lunch and learn seminar at the Faculty of Extension, and the presentation was called "The Humanity of it All:  Exposing Love, Life, Work and Stupidity". I wasn't sure what to expect from it, but I was interested to see what it was all about.

Later on, I came to the realization (well, actually someone helped me realize), that I got exactly what I needed out of it. Although I didn't really find the presentation "enlightening", I came to realize that I'm in a different space right now. If this presentation happened months ago, I may have had an "a-ha moment", but because of where I am right now, the presentation just validated stuff I already knew.

Doctors, doctors, and more doctors

This past week consisted of doctors appointments. On Monday, I took Teagan to the pediatrician because her cold was getting worse and I suspected she had pink eye. Sure enough, she had pink eye but at least she only had a head cold and it didn't go into her chest. Later that day, we had an appointment with the audiologist to get her new mold for her hearing aid. It fit much better than the original one, so hopefully it'll be more comfortable for Teagan.

On Tuesday, I went to the doctor because my throat was sore, and my glands were a bit swollen. I figured I had strep throat (because it felt the same way the last time I had it), so my doctor gave me some antibiotics.

Then on Thursday, Teagan had a dentist appointment to assess how her teeth were coming in. Apparently she has enough space, so they didn't have to pull out 3 more teeth. Whew!

Now, I may have to go to the doctor next week to get something for this rash I developed. Earlier this week, I got hairspray on my neck. I didn't think anything of it, but later that day, my co-worker noticed that my neck was red. It's been irritated and itchy ever since, so I went to the drug store to get some hydrocortisone cream. I don't think it's working because it's still itchy, and I'm trying really hard to scratch it. Hopefully it clears up soon...

Enlightened and awakened

I went to a self-development workshop today and was surprised about what I learned about myself.

First off, we all have the power of choice. We are constantly making choices, but most often those choices are a force of habit. When you wake up in the morning, are you consciously aware that you want to open your eyes? Or do you just open them? Do you choose to brush your teeth with your right hand or your left hand? Or do you automatically go through your routine without realizing that your body is already making the choice for you? Are you consciously aware of the choices you are making throughout the day, or are you just making decisions for the sake of making them? After listening to all this, I realized that my body is on "autopilot" and just goes through the routine. I'm not present in the choices that I make. I'm either following what my body has been "trained" to do, or I'm ahead of myself in my decisions. Seldom am I actually in the moment, making a conscious decision to eat with my left hand or put my left shoe on first.

Looking back to earlier in the morning, I almost convinced myself not to go to the session because I was having intense menstrual cramps. But I chose to tough it out and go. And I'm so glad I went.

I also learned that we have certain aspects about ourselves that are problematic - "aspectics". It could be not believing in yourself; thinking that you are not worthy enough; or being afraid of doing something. So how do we change that? We did an exercise to help us discover what that "aspectic" is truly telling us. It's not telling us you can't do something, it's telling us that you actually can. It's just a matter of turning the negative into something positive. What is the aspects' next higher goal for me?

In light of Sharon's recent resignation, I made myself believe that I didn't want her job because I didn't want the expectation that was behind it. I created this cloud, as if a storm were looming, that was swirling around my head and on my shoulders. But today I learned that it wasn't because of the expectation - it was because I was afraid. I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to do that job. That fear was driven by thoughts of being overwhelmed, scared, and intimidated. So what were those aspects really trying to tell me? When I appreciated those feelings and were grateful for them, I discovered that I was overwhelmed because of the challenge that it would present. I was scared because I would have to rise to the occasion or step up my game. And I was intimidated because I would have to have perseverance. Now that I recognized that the actual goal involved being challenged, stepping up my game, and having perseverance; it wasn't a negative experience anymore. That was only one layer that my partner and I went through. As we delved deeper, it also became a cleansing process. I was crying because of the overwhelming emotion that came over me, but I felt so much better afterward.

At the end of the exercise, I realized - actually, I made a choice - that I have to talk to manager. I have to present my case to her in order to take advantage of the opportunity to advance my career. I want to be recognized as making a contribution and making a difference.

Appreciation

- noun
--> assessment of the true worth or value of persons or things

Such a simple act, but yet a powerful statement when made.

Signs of growing up

I still find it hard to believe that Teagan is 6, and will be 7 in July. How does time fly so fast? It seems like it was only yesterday that I took her to Kindermusik. Then she went to playschool. And now she's in grade one. She's going through a lot of "big kid" stuff this year. Reading books by herself. Writing her name. Putting her hair in a ponytail or braid. Getting a new hearing aid. And today, she pulled out her first baby tooth! Her adult tooth has already come in behind it and we were just waiting for the baby tooth to fall out (I tried to pull it out, but I couldn't bring myself to do it!).

Even though she's so tiny, she's not a baby anymore, but a little girl.

What a week!

It was my first week back, after being on holidays for 2 weeks.

Monday was fine. I did what I had to do and I actually felt like I accomplished something. Although part of the reason was because I was checking my email from home. I know I shouldn't have done that, but I wanted to be mentally prepared for when I got back, and I didn't want to waste my entire day going through emails that did necessarily pertain to me.

Tuesday was payroll day. I went to yoga at lunch, and felt much better afterward.

Wednesday was a rollercoaster of emotions. We had a quick meeting to talk about some housekeeping stuff, and before I sat down, another one was called. My co-worker, Sharon, is resigning. Talk about a shock to the system! I was sad, upset, and a little pissed off. Sad because she's leaving; upset because she's leaving me; and pissed off because she's leaving me and I felt like she should've warned me beforehand. I went back to my desk, somewhat dumbfounded, to collect my thoughts. My first thought was WTF! But then I got myself together and processed what just happened. Sharon had been unhappy and frustrated for the longest time. And we always talked about that if one left, the other one would follow. So is this my cue? Where would I go?

I didn't talk to her until lunch, which was when I got the whole story. I was honest with her and told her how I felt, but supported her decision. She actually wasn't looking, but her boyfriend noticed it in the paper and suggested she applied. She even waited until the closing date of the posting to apply. Then she got a phone call for an interview, had a second interview, and got the job. She wanted to tell me before she announced it to everyone else, but because of the timing, she couldn't because everything happened so fast. I know this is a good move for her, and she'll do well in it. It's just disappointing to see someone so dedicated in their job leave, because it didn't seem like her opinions were really valued.

I told Jason all about it, and he suggested I apply for her job. I told him I didn't want it because a) she does way too much - a lot of stuff gets dumped on her; and b) I don't have enough experience under my belt to be a payroll supervisor. Then he said to at least put my name down, so that it shows that I'm interested in growing with the company. And that's when the wheels started turning (he has a way of doing that to me!). Do I put my name out there? And if I do, how I do that and make sure I don't get "dumped" on?

I talked to Sharon about it the next day, and asked her if she thought I'd be able to "fit" in that role. Perhaps not as a supervisor right away, but eventually. She said I could definitely be in a "senior" role, but told me to be careful not to get "dumped" on. And also not to take on a lot of her tasks, being in the position that I'm in (ie. make sure I get compensated for taking on more responsibility). I know a couple of her tasks will be given to me, which is fine, because they're just monthly things. As for the other stuff - that's another story. I'm already being copied on emails because they're assuming I know everything Sharon did because we worked on that project together. Uh, not really. I know some parts of it, but everything. And they shouldn't expect that I know everything Sharon knows.

So the next 3 weeks will be interesting. It'll be a lot of learning, but that's OK.

Thursday was a bit of a write-off. I didn't accomplish a lot, went to yoga, and had a meeting. We had a really good yoga class. And I was quite proud of myself for being able to do a toe stand, even if it was for only a few seconds. The meeting we had seemed pointless. No one seemed to want to say anything, but yet they complain about their frustrations all the time. This was their opportunity to voice their frustrations, but nothing. I even tried to get people to talk, but it seemed like no one was really interested.

And today (Friday), was a day off for me. I took a lieu day because I worked on the Saturday before I went on holidays. I didn't do too much because I think I'm coming down with something. My throat is a bit sore, and my glands are a bit swollen. I'm hoping it's not strep throat, but rather some kind of ear or throat infection or something. I did go for lunch with Larry and Myer, so it was good to catch up with them.

SWEEP...SWEEP...HURRY!

Even though I'm still on vacation, I went to our Curling Funspiel yesterday (am I dedicated or what?!). This is only my second time curling, but it was a lot of fun - mainly because the majority of the people have never curled before, and everyone was in costume. Our team, the Rockin' HULA-gans, had a Hawaiian theme so we were wearing leis, grass skirts, and had flowers in our hair. On one of my tosses, I lost balance and "dove" into the ice. It was quite funny because I slid a bit, as if I was following the rock. Anyway, we didn't win, nor did we come in last place (actually we were second last). Our team captain (one of the few who has curled before), said we actually played really well considering most of us haven't curled before. And the only reason we lost was because of the weird ruling they had where the opponents could steal your points.

One thing they did mention was that we would "feel it" the next day. And I am definitely feeling it today! I figured my arm would be sore from tossing the rock. But when I woke up this morning, my back was sore especially between my shoulder blades, because of all that sweeping. I need a massage...

Stay-at-home-mom moment

Even though Teagan is back to school this week, I still have the week off. Between running around and doing errands, I had a moment..."so this is what it feels like to be a stay-at-home-mom". As much as I like having time off and being able to do all this personal stuff, I don't think I could ever be a stay-at-home mom. I would get bored fairly quickly because, really, there's only so many errands and chores one can do that there would have to be something else to occupy my time.

So, a working mom I stay...

Today's adventure
My mission today was to find a pair of white dress shoes for Teagan. So, I went to this children's store that I figured would have what I was looking for. As soon as I walked in, the saleslady asked if I was looking for anything in particular, so I told her. She was very helpful and showed me a few different pairs. In fact, she was so helpful that I walked out of the store with a shirt, a pair of pants, and a 3-in-1 rain suit for Teagan; AND a pair of my shoes for myself. Wait a minute - isn't this a children's store?!

Well, here's the scoop on that:  I commented on one of the pairs of shoes she showed me and said "these are cute...it's too bad they don't have them in adult sizes..." And that's the mistake I made. She explained to me that a junior girls size 5 is equivalent to a woman's size 7 (I actually knew this from before, but didn't know they carried sizes that big). So, she gives me that sort of evil-eye look and asked if I wanted to try them on. And, of course I had to! And, of course they fit! So here I am with a pair of shoes for myself, and I haven't even gotten Teagan's yet. She got back on track, and got the pair of shoes that I picked for Teagan. [mental note: I may have found a new place to buy casual shoes if they carry my size - and they will be cheaper than buying them in an adult shoe store]

And then it snowballed from there. She pointed out that their rain gear just came in and asked if Teagan needed anything. I told her she had 2 pairs of rain boots, and before I could tell her that she already had a rain coat, she was showing me a couple of rain coats (with splash pants) that would go with the boots we already have. Next thing I know, she's bringing one of the rain suits to the front till. And then, she pointed out the sale rack which was an additional 50% off, and of course, I couldn't pass up the sale rack! That's where I found the shirt. While I was browsing, she was still "shopping" for me and showed me some really cute spring outfits, and I have to say they were really cute. But expensive. I told her that I would have to come back when I had more time (because I had to get to yoga), but she showed me one last thing and that was a pair of jeggings, which I also picked up.

So I spent WAY more than I wanted to. Dammit. I was only supposed to get a pair of shoes! I do have to give her credit because she was so helpful. You could tell she was "up selling", but she did it in a way that wasn't pushy. She somehow made you want to buy more, and not really feel bad about doing so (until you leave the store, that is, and realize what just happened!). If I ever have to go back to that store, which probably won't be for a very long time, I would like to deal specifically with her because she knew her stuff and didn't just show you all the expensive stuff. She was very particular on what she picked out.

Yoga at Work
My work is offering yoga classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the month of April. Today was the first class and it was OK. A little different than what I'm used to (there was more "flow"), but it was alright. I'm not sure if they'll be offering it again after April, but regardless, I'll probably go back to the yoga studio I was going to before, starting in May.

Taxes filed
Unlike last year when I waited until the last minute to file my taxes, I actually managed to do it yesterday and mailed them today. One less thing to worry about.

Purging Project 2
My turn to purge. I went through my closet and bins the other day and pulled out stuff I haven't worn and probably will not wear. I managed to get a small pile of clothes, but nothing like in previous years when I'd fill garbage bags. I guess I've been good in keeping up with purging?

Edmonton Rush

The BF and I went to our first ever lacrosse game on Friday night. Neither one of us had ever seen a game, and when I got the chance to get 2-for-1 tickets (they were pretty good seats), I figured it'd be something worth experiencing.

Even though I know of the game, I don't really know the rules behind it. From what we figured out, it is:
  • similar to basketball in that there are 4 quarters, and there's a shot clock (you have 30 seconds to shoot the ball at the goalie, and it has to touch him in order for the clock to be reset; unless the opponent intercepts the ball);
  • similar to hockey with some of the equipment they have - helmet and gloves. The stick they use has a net at the end to catch the ball. The players wear jerseys and shorts, and the goalie is the only one that's fully padded;
  • similar to rugby in they way they face-off (well, that's the comparison I'm making).
The game is also pretty rough and the players don't hold back when it comes to hitting someone with their stick or getting physical. It's a fast-paced game and music is playing all the time - probably so the crowd doesn't get bored (?). The one thing I noticed right off the bat was that all the players are TALL! It's like they have a minimum height requirement of 6 feet or something.

Anyway, it was a good game and really easy to get caught up in the excitement of it.

Purging Project 1

The mission was to go through Teagan's old clothes and get rid of stuff that didn't fit. And since most of the stuff was already put into a giant bin, it was pretty easy. Just a bit time consuming. The real task was going through the giant bin and taking out stuff that was worn out, had stains, etc. From what was left, I divided it 3 ways, to go to 3 different people.

I'm so glad I finished that project because it was nagging at me.

However, being that I purged all this stuff, I had this need to go shopping. So I went shopping and bought her 6 tops, 2 pairs of jeans, and a new pair of runners for school. And yes, they were all on sale!

Really, this whole purging/purchasing thing is just a vicious cycle...

Time for a brain dump

I really need to get back to blogging on a more regular basis. But between work and other "commitments", where do I find the time? So, in no particular order:

Finally, some time off!
It's been a long time coming, but I finally have some time off. Although I was supposed to go the Philippines for 3 weeks, those plans changed in light of what happened in Japan, and the potential earthquake(s)/typhoons/natural disasters that were being predicted for Manila. I didn't want to subject Teagan (or myself) to that. And even if I went, I would've been too stressed/paranoid to enjoy my trip. So I cancelled it. I may have lost $$$, but in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't amount to much.

So instead, I'm off for 2 weeks. And during these 2 weeks, I have a lot of "projects" planned for myself. One of them being..

Purging
Ah yes. With the onset of spring (or at least the idea of it), comes spring cleaning. I started my purge yesterday by going through all this clutter that's built up on my desk. Bills, junk mail, school newsletters, etc. I even went through my bin of files and found stuff dating back to 2005! I thought I got rid of this stuff last time I purged. Anyway, that's pretty much done.

The next thing to tackle is the purging of clothes - both mine and Teagan's. This will probably be a 2-day project, depending on how quickly I can go through all this stuff without any interruption from Teagan...

Success on the mini golf course - again!
So the "pro" decided he wanted a rematch, but this time on a different course - Putt 'n Glow. Perhaps the combination of darkness and glow-in-the-dark outlines were supposed to throw me off...but they didn't. There was a point where I thought that he was going to beat me, but I played a good back nine, so I kept my title. Muahahahahaha...

And if that wasn't enough
We took the kids (5-pin) bowling again, and had a rematch of that also. I knew I wasn't going to do well. So I let him have that one. Can't win 'em all...

A Geisha, a Diva, and a Sunset Passion
New drinks that I've tried in the last little while; 2 of which are martinis. I'm starting to like this category of cocktails...

Ginger from Amsterdam
That's my BF's "sister from another mister" (they're brother-and-sister-like friends). She is the most outgoing, flamboyant person I've ever met. I've met her twice and she is just too much fun!

It's definitely not KD
I took a stab at making mac-n-cheese the real way. Not out of a box with fake powdered cheese, but with real ingredients. And I have to say it turned out OK. I made a mental note on how to "perfect" it for next time.

My new toy

After 5+ years, I FINALLY upgraded my phone. This whole time, I've had just a basic phone - no camera, no special features, no bells or whistles - just talk and text. And now I'm happy to report... are you ready???... that I have... now brace yourself... an iPhone! Yup, I gave in and got the the iPhone 4. But really though, I look at it as consolidating my devices because I've been carrying around both my cell phone and my iPod touch (because it stores all my contacts, pictures, etc); and it was making my purse quite heavy. Now I have everything in one. I just have to figure out all the features and stuff....

Déjà vu

Friday night. Same restaurant, different location. Same meals, different drinks. Same date, only two months later. Seems like it's been longer...

'Tis the season for T4's

Fa la la la la la la la la
Working long and crazy hours
Fa la la la la la la la la
Too much manual intervention
Fa la la la la la la la la
I can't wait for my vacation!
Fa la la la la la la la la!

It's been a while since my last post
...and this is what it comes down to - creating a song about T4's! How sad is that?! I've spent the past weekend working on this painstaking project, and the bulk of it was spent manually folding T4's because the folding function on our pressure sealer wasn't working. Oh so much fun! But I am happy to say that all 4200-ish T4's are folded, sealed and ready to be sent out. Nothing like leaving it to the absolute last day for distribution!

Anyway, since my last post:
  • BF has met my dad (and they had a very good conversation - about nothing, really);
  • I met some of BF's friends;
  • had a "family day" on Family Day (took the kids bowling);
  • missed yoga on Thursday, which was NOT good (I'm not too happy for missing it);
  • Teagan and I got our travel immunization shots (ouch!); and
  • I developed a sinus infection, but saw the doctor and he gave me some antibiotics (thank goodness!)

Legally Blonde
I saw Legally Blonde last night with Nicole. Since I hadn't seen the movie, I didn't know what to expect. But after watching the show, I understand the gist of it. Now I want to rent the movie so I can make sense of the musical I just watched. It was very entertaining, and the one thing I noticed was that even the understudies were polished in their performance (ie. they weren't trying so hard to play their characters).

Word of the day
"Wonderful" wasn't encompassing what I wanted it to. So I'm glad I came across this word:

Halcyon [hal-see-uhn]
  -adjective
  1. calm; peaceful; tranquil
  2. rich; wealthy; prosperous
  3. happy; joyful; carefree
  4. of or pertaining to the halcyon or kingfisher
Deliriously giggly
I had a case of the giggles tonight. Probably because I've spent so much time at work, that I don't know what's happening around me. I seriously need a vacation...

Full

Connected with one's space
Gazes of awe and admiration
Appreciation of touch
Excitement from simplicity
Enlightened by the "lockbox"
Confessions of emotions
Revealing what lies inside
 - Full:  a simple, but powerful revelation

It's a small world

My BF works with my sister-in-law's sister's husband. How weird is that? Talk about six degrees of separation...

This past weekend

Friday:  Good food, good company
Went to Doan's for Vietnamese and met some very nice people. Later on in the weekend, I had a conversation with myself. What did they think of me? Did they like me? What did they say about me? Then I stopped myself. In the end, it didn't matter what they thought of me or if they liked me, because I don't care if they did or not. However, I was happy to hear that did like me!

Saturday:  (De)Tour of downtown
The plan was to go somewhere classy and quiet. A place that had good ambiance. So downtown seemed like a good place to find a venue. Although it ended up being a (de)tour of downtown, and the final destination ended up being Moxie's in the west end. Go figure.

Sunday:  Screwed up schedule
After working all weekend (because it's T4 season), I got mixed up with my days and totally forgot about my yoga class. I was not too happy about that. Now I have 2 classes to make up for before the beginning of March. Hmmm, I wonder when I can fit that in...

Hockey game last night

I haven't been to a hockey game in a long time, so it was good to go. Even though I enjoyed the company (BF took me), the game wasn't that great. The first period was kind of boring (the pace was slow, the crowd wasn't really into it), and then it kinda picked up during the second and third period. I was more focused on eating ice cream (how sad is that!).

We ended up leaving with 10 minutes left in the game. At that point the score was 3-0 Chicago. Later, we found out the final score was 4-1 Chicago. Oh well. Hopefully Edmonton gets the first round draft pick...

Eye update 2

I got the results from my eye scan last week, and the surgeon decided that I would be good for Lasik. Even though I was "borderline" for getting the procedure done, he still said that I would be OK with that procedure. The only downside to that is, if for whatever reason I needed an enhancement, then I wouldn't be able to get it done because I wouldn't have enough tissue left. Which means that I would have to wear glasses...again. Hmmmm. When I initially heard that, I wasn't sure if I wanted to get Lasik. But, being that the surgeon is specialized in this field, and their "failure" rate is less than 1%, I'm confident that I'll be fine.

So, I'm scheduled to get my eyes done at the beginning of May. Wish me luck...

Chipping away at ice

I was outside earlier, shoveling the snow and noticed patches of ice on our driveway. After pushing the snow, I decided to take the chisel to the ice. At first it was tough to scrape it, but then I got into a groove and started chipping away at it.

Then it dawned on me. With a lot of work and determination, you can chip away at the ice and get to the core. [I was having a moment...]

A-ma-zing

That's all I have to say...

Eye update

I got a call from the eye place the other day, and apparently I have to go in for one more eye scan test (tomorrow this morning) so that the surgeon can determine what procedure would be best for me. At least I don't have to get the drops to dilate my pupils again - that was too weird.

I like the fact that they really examine your eyes to see what's best for you. Just because you may be a candidate for Lasik, doesn't necessarily mean that it's the best procedure for you.

Wonderful

-adjective
--> of a sort that causes or arouses wonder; amazing; astonishing

Some things are just so... wonderful!

Getting back to normal

My eyes are slowly getting back to normal. Now I can see my computer without having to take off my glasses and pressing my face right up against my screen. My pupils are still a bit dilated, but I'm sure they'll be fine by tomorrow.

Eye assessment

After MANY years of deciding whether or not to get laser eye surgery done, I've decided to take the plunge. I had my eye assessment earlier this morning to see if I was a candidate, and lucky me, I am! In speaking with the doctor on site, he mentioned that he wanted to get the other doctor's opinion (the one who will be performing the surgery) on the results of my tests. Either I get Lasik or PRK or a combination of both. Either way, the cost is the same and they have a lifetime guarantee. So, if for whatever reason, I need to get an enhancement, I don't have to pay for it. Plus, I can also see my regular optometrist for a "second opinion" on how my eyes are doing, and I won't get charged for that either.

My surgery is booked for the end of April. If the surgeon decides that I should get Lasik, then maybe I can get it done sooner, and perhaps get it done before my trip, so that my follow up appointments will fall around the time I'll be away. Otherwise, if I get PRK and there happens to be a complication (which they do not anticipate), at least I'll be around to see someone.

Right now, my eyes are tripping me out. They put drops in my eyes to dilate my pupils (they're still dilated), but it's creating a reverse effect on me in that, I have to take off my glasses to see up close. On the other hand, I can see fine with them on if I'm looking at something farther away. It's really weird. They also put numbing drops to measure the pressure in my cornea, which involved poking my eye with a pen-like instrument. I didn't feel anything, and when I asked the technician if she poked my eye, she corrected me by saying that she "gently touched my cornea" to measure it. Whatever.

I'm looking forward to becoming "lens-free" and having more freedom to do stuff without having to worry about wearing glasses.

Adding another element

To encompass the 'before (redesign), during (refresh, rejuvenate), and after (reflect)' stages of an event, I've decided to add another element to my title. I'm not too sure where I'm going with this, but it was an idea that popped in my head. And funny enough, it illustrates alliteration (ah yes, think back to English 10!).

Finally!

The graters are in our neighborhood cleaning our streets. I can't believe how much snow we have. Now the problem is, with all this snow piled up on the sides of the streets, it'll create a flooding issue if we start to get warmer weather. Well, at least I don't have to worry about the ruts and driving slalom in our crescent.

Another merlot kind of night

No, I'm not becoming an alcoholic. We decided to have pizza for dinner, and since my mom was having a beer (and I'm not a beer drinker), I decided to have some red wine. I've had 3 glasses tonight and I am so mellow right now.

Actually, I'm kind of hungry too. Hmmm, what to eat...

Success on the golf course

Mini golf, that is. I have never played mini golf EVER, until last night. And surprisingly, I beat the "pro". Muahahahahaha! It was so much fun! :)

Got the tickets!

Going to the Katy Perry concert - woohoo! After about 10 mins trying to get tickets, my co-worker Sharon, and I opted to get single seats. We managed to get pretty good seats, basically in the same row, but a section apart. So we won't be sitting together, but that's OK. Maybe we'll luck out and someone won't show up...

Definition

To determine the definition of a word, we use the dictionary. So have you ever wondered how the dictionary would define "definition"?  It is "the act of defining or making definite, distinct, or clear".  Hmmm...

To be able to define one's status is truly amazing.

Not quick enough

After dropping Teagan off at musical theater, I ran (literally) to Second Cup to use their wi-fi, so that I could get tickets to the Katy Perry concert (pre-sale). It's amazing how quickly these tickets go, but I don't believe that the only tickets left are in the 200-section (nose bleeds). So, I'm going to try again next Friday when the tickets go on sale to the general public. I'm assuming that only certain sections are allotted to these pre-sales because they have to give everyone a chance to get them, right? Well, that's what I'm going with.

So, I'll have to be quick next week. Since I'll be at work, I should block that time on my calendar so no one sends me a meeting request :P

[sitting in Second Cup right now, drinking a DECAF dark chocolate latte again....I'm not feeling anything, which means it is decaf!]

Katy Perry is coming

I heard on the radio that Katy Perry is coming July 17th. I like her, so I'm excited to go! Another concert to add to my list...

Mellowed out from Merlot

After yoga, I went to Cactus Club for drinks and supper. I had this raincoast greens (no, not rainforest) salad, and it was really good. I also had a glass of merlot, which was really nice. It probably isn't the "right" wine to pair with a salad, but who cares. I wanted a salad, and I wanted a glass of red wine!

I'm so relaxed right now that I could just fall asleep. The only problem is, even though I only had a salad for dinner, I'm still full. It was a big salad! So I can't quite go to sleep. *yawn*

So much for going to sleep early... oh, and I think I have heartburn... ugh

Yoga class #3

I just love my Thursday night yoga class! And a big part of it has to do with the instructor. I'm convinced she's hypnotizing us to a certain extent. At the the end of the class, she turns off the lights and we just lie there - relaxed. I caught myself falling asleep, and had I not caught myself, I probably would've ended up snoring. Sheeesh!

I also discovered that one of my junior high teachers is taking the same class. And she still looks the same, even after all this time!

Caffeine kick

Yesterday morning, I stopped by Second Cup on my way to work. It was my co-worker's birthday (Sharon), so I thought I'd get her a latte and a piece of cake. They had new feature flavors, so I got her a raspberry dark chocolate latte and I got myself just a dark chocolate one (decaf). I also got a piece of this skor bundt cake (I saw it before and thought I'd get that next time I was in).

I got to work before Sharon, so I put the latte and cake on her desk. Meanwhile, I was at my desk and sipping on my latte. I thought it was a bit strong, but didn't think anything of it. I also took a bite of my cake (yes, I got a piece for myself too and it was really yummy!), but saved the rest for after lunch.

When I got through half my latte, it was then that I noticed the "decaf" box on the side of my cup was not checked off.  Which meant that my latte was not decaf! No wonder I was feeling a bit jittery. I guess the combination of caffeine and chocolate got to me (this only happened one other time before). So for most of the morning, I was going a hundred miles a minute. Although I did manage to get a lot done.

By lunch time, I had somewhat "calmed down". But by mid-afternoon, I started to crash. So, I ate my cake to give me that extra boost for the rest of the afternoon. Talk about a rollercoaster of a day!

So the moral of the story is: don't have caffeine/chocolate on a empty stomach, and if you do, make sure you get DECAF!

Second yoga class

Wasn't as great as my first one, so I'm a bit disappointed about that. I think part of it has to do with the instructor (didn't have the same "hypnotic" tone in her voice as the other one); and it also seemed a bit choppy. The other thing that distracted me was the fact that 2 other people brought in their cell phones, so there were times when one would vibrate (which you could hear), and the other one just forgot to turn off her ringer. Seriously?!? How am I supposed to relax and clear my head with these distractions? *sigh*

Next class will be better....

On a roll

Today's formula:

    retraction  +  rejection  =  release

Now I can "focus".

Movie weekend

On Friday night, I saw The Dilemma. The movie wasn't as funny as I expected it to be, but it was still OK. Then on Saturday, I saw The Green Hornet in 3D. I didn't think I would enjoy the movie because the last 3D movie I saw (Avatar) made me dizzy and gave me a headache. Surprisingly enough, I managed to watch the entire movie with the 3D glasses on. I guess it's because there weren't too many scenes that involved flying through the air. Anyway, I actually liked the movie and found it to be entertaining.

My first yoga class ever

Was absolutely awesome! I don't why I didn't get into yoga sooner. After class, I was relaxed but refreshed. I felt alive but calm. And I was amazed at how it cleared my head! Maybe because I was concentrating on the pose or on the breathing, but even as I was driving home, I noticed that I didn't have any thoughts running through my head. Even though I tried to think about what happened at work earlier, the thought wouldn't stay. It's like I had some kind of "pop-up blocker" in my head. Weird.

I should have a really good sleep tonight.

Perception

It's all in how you look at it. And yet there are so many possibilites to it. It's interesting how people perceive things, and even moreso when it makes you think.

Tuesday, January 11, 2011

The clock said:

Earlier at work, as I was chatting with my co-worker, I happened to look at the clock on my phone and it said: "11:11    11-01-11". Weird.

Yoga

I almost talked myself out of signing up for yoga last night. But after re-assessing the situation, I decided to bite the bullet and sign up for Hatha yoga twice a week. I've never done yoga and always wanted to try it, so now's my chance. This should be fun...

Snow

It's white and fluffy and each snowflake is unique. I remember as a kid I'd sit in the snow and look at the snowflakes that landed on my mitts. Each one was different, and if I looked closely enough, I could see the details of each one. What happened to those days when you'd sit outside and just marvel at the stuff around you? I guess it's because I didn't have to worry about shoveling back then. The last time I remember getting a dump of snow like this was when I was in elementary and I had to walk to school. The snow was well above my knees, but I managed to get to school on time.

Like everyone else in the city, I spent the past weekend shoveling. And because of our long driveway, I had to push the snow from the front half of the driveway to the front lawn. It took a few sessions but I managed to clear half of the driveway. And being the perfectionist that I am, it wasn't good enough for me just to push the snow. Oh no - I had to make sure the edge of the lawn was perfect, etc. Needless to say, the snow has been cleared - for now. Hopefully it doesn't snow anymore, because I don't know where else to put it. And hopefully the city comes around and grates the residential areas. Driving the next couple of days will be interesting...

Happy New Blog!

I mean, year. Happy New Year! Since my last "chapter" lasted about 6 years, I figured it was time for something different. I mean, why not? It's a new year; the start of a new decade; and really, I could use a change.

I'm not going to bother with doing a review of last year - well, because I really don't want to and - because it's done. Instead I'm going to focus on the possibilities this new year can bring - a new look (I got a haircut), meeting new people, and experiencing new adventures. I've also decided to take up yoga, so hopefully this will be the start of me getting back on the health track.

I'm not sure how I want to tackle this new blog (ie. daily/weekly rants, random thoughts, etc). For now, I'll just go with the flow.
